The Truckee Hotel, as featured in

From the May, 2009 issue:

“The next time you’re tracing the footsteps of the Donner party in the Sierra Nevada mountains, save yourself a little hardship and spend the night at the Truckee Hotel, a bed and breakfast in the resort town of Truckee. The hotel is right across the street from Union Pacific’s main line over Donner Pass, part of the transcontinental railroad, and a short walk from the Amtrak station where the California Zephyr calls daily. An inn has occupied this site since stagecoach days, though the current building dates to the early 20th century. Rooms on one side of the inn overlook UP’s main line and manager Tim Tonachella is happy to accommodate train-watchers. The 37 guest rooms vary in size and price; eight have private baths. The building has been remodeled but retains its historic appearance, wtih plenty of wood finish (rumors claim the hotel might be haunted). There’s even a restaurant on the ground floor, so you’ll have no need to recreate the Donner party’s most famous exploit.”

Whether you're an avid train watcher and enthusiast, or simply enjoy seeing a modern day steam engine, Truckee is undoubtedly a premiere spot to see some breathtaking trains.

Steam or diesel, old or new... a range of different engines pass through the heart of Truckee, including specialty trains such as rotary snow plows (see right.)

Situated right along the Union Pacific tracks through Truckee, The Truckee Hotel is an ideal spot for seeing these modern marvels in action.
